Deep in the heart of Thorn Ridge, south of Deception Pass and beyond the place where the Forbidden River slips underground, the forest hides its oldest secret. Beneath the choking brush and heavy vines stands an ancient statue, cloaked in moss and towering toward the canopy. They call it the Owl King. Few have ever seen it, for it only reveals itself to those who still believe.
Once a year, when the veil thins on Halloween night, belief is rewarded. The cryptids come first, their shapes sliding between the trees. Witches drift in with the fog, werewolves pad through the undergrowth, and ghosts shimmer like faint lanterns. Vampires gather in whispers, and mermaids rise from the dark water to walk the earth. Above them all, winged creatures crowd the branches, waiting in silence for the stirring.
Then it begins. Fog crawls from the ground, curling at the base of the moss-covered statue. The Owl King awakens. His eyes burn gold, his beak splits open in a scream that shakes the Ridge, and molten light spills from his mouth and eyes, running like rivers through the forest floor. With a thunderous crack, his wings unfold, revealing great doors made of shadow and flame.
The forest erupts. Music pulses through the night, drums and bass pounding like a heartbeat. Candles flicker, goblets overflow, and every creature of myth and nightmare gathers beneath the King’s gaze. The Owl King steps to the podium, his eyes blazing, and roars, “It’s All Hallow’s Eve, let the revel begin!” The Ridge trembles. The trees shudder. The night itself comes alive.
If you ever wander too far into the forest on Halloween, you might find the path. You might hear the music echoing through the trees or see the flicker of gold deep within the mist. But take heed, the Owl King does not call to doubters. Only those who truly believe in what cannot be seen will find the doors, and only those who enter will know whether they can ever leave.
